The Studio Maui
“Exercise that’s done strictly for its own physical sake, divorced from the emotions, eventually fails. To feel good enough to last a lifetime, an exercise regimen must satisfy the heart and soul.”
– The Nia Technique by Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas
In their book, The Nia Technique, Gabrielle Roth and Carlos Rosas explain that every muscle in the body has memory receptors that are connected to the brain; and the more aware you are of your body, you gain enhanced linkage to your mind and emotions.
The Sanskrit word ‘asana’ in the Yoga tradition means “to be established in a particular posture.” Gary Kraftsow, former guest teacher at The Studio Maui, explains in his book, Yoga for Wellness, asana ‘evolved’ as part of a spiritual practice incorporating purification, accomplishment and realization.
Whether its Yoga, Qi Gong, Nia, 5 Rhythms or Pilates, various forms of movement are now easily available to women. In addition to Yoga and Nia, The Studio Maui offers a wide variety of movement classes. Check out our website: thestudiomaui.com for class descriptions. We will also offer workshops every Saturday in September in celebration of Women’s Health Month. See our ad for details. Call 575-9390 for more information.

Dr. Mastroianni
“Osteoporosis is a condition that affects many women, especially those who are postmenopausal, thin and small-framed,” states Jill Street PA-C from Dr. Mastroianni’s office.
Osteoporosis is defined as thinning of the bones, which could potentially lead to broken bones. Osteoporosis can also affect women who are not postmenopausal. A simple test can determine the health of a woman’s bones and there are measures that can prevent breakdown of bones for both premenopausal and postmenopausal women.
A bone scan (DEXA scan) should be performed every 2-3 years in all women over the age of 50 (and those under 50 who are postmenopausal) to determine bone health. This test is a fancy x-ray that looks at a woman’s hip and spine (the two most common areas where bone thinning occurs). Most insurance companies in Hawaii cover this test as a standard screening exam in women over 50.
Women should also begin (well before the age of 50) to get adequate amounts calcium and vitamin D in their diet. The daily recommendation of calcium and vitamin D is 1,200 mg of calcium and 800 iu of Vitamin D. There are many over-the-counter supplements that have this exact dosage.
Women need to incorporate weight bearing exercises into the daily routine as a means of keeping their bones healthy and strong. Weight bearing exercises are those exercises in which your feet touch the ground. Examples include aerobics, walking, or yoga. These exercises need to be performed on a daily basis for approximately 30-45 minutes.
By being proactive in life, many women can prevent bone fractures. Routine bone scans, daily exercise, stopping smoking, and getting adequate amount of calcium and vitamin D in their diet can significantly reduce bone fractures. Talk to your health care provider about prevention of osteoporosis and keeping yourself healthy and fracture-free!!

Upcountry Fitness
“Women have emerged strong, confident, and intelligent individuals in their own right. They have come a long way since my grandmother marched with the Suffragettes,” says Jan Sears, co-owner of Upcountry Fitness. She goes on to tell us, “But they still worry. Panic disorders and depression are twice as common in women as men. Polls show women’s number one health worry is breast cancer. Yet hip fractures caused by osteoporosis kills and disfigures far more women than breast cancer. They worry about aging and losing their beauty. But many women do not worry about the things they should worry about such as heart disease that kills more women than all cancers combined making health a top priority instead of taking care of everybody/everything else first is crucial.”
“Nothing you do is more important to your health, beauty, and how you will feel every day for the rest of your life than daily exercise. Exercise is as effective as therapy and drugs for both anxiety disorders and depression. Lifting weights every couple of days stops muscles loss, bone loss, and weakening tendons. It also strengthens the joint pads and gets rid of joint pain,” Jan says.
“Aerobic exercise does more to stop actual death by heart attack and a lot of cancers, but strength training can make your life worthwhile,” Henry Lodge, MD. Jan adds, “Exercising and strength training will make your life
worthwhile and worry free!”

Because of this, women’s skin is more susceptible to damage from the sun, smoking, environmental chemicals, heat and hormone changes. Any changing lesion or new lesion that has been present more than one month should be checked by a dermatologist.
Yearly complete check ups are recommended. Maui Dermatology accepts most insurances. To schedule an appointment call 808-877-7477.

Maui Spa Retreat
Essential oils, pure fragrant essences from flowers, leaves, branches, barks, roots, seeds resins and fruit assist women in health and well being on every level. The medicinal substances contained in essential oils have effects that go beyond controlling the symptoms developed by illness, they stimulate the body’s natural defenses and strengthen the entire organism. They assist us in gaining insight, understanding and releasing unnecessary stress while offering points of reference to facilitate the change we desire in our lives. Oils extracted from roots support us through times of instability, high anxiety and fear. Oils extracted from the wood or trunks can help direct energy, provide balance, and give us a sense of core support. Oils extracted from the fruit rejuvenate the lymphatic system and bring emotional cleansing. Oils that are extracted from seeds can support our potentials, new growth and offer nourishment for birth, and the reproductive system. Essential oils can encourage the release of blocked energy
emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually as they subtly trigger the release of natural hormones in the brain and help us feel uplifted and better able to cope with stress, pain and strong emotions while aligning us with our true potential.

What do a Level 5 nine-year old gymnast, a mother of newborn twins, a 72 year-old grandmother, a state
finalist outrigger paddler, a pregnant business owner and an internationally ranked tennis player have in common? Well, for one, they are all remarkable females and they all see Dr. Rick Anderson, a Maui chiropractor.

Quantum Touch
Chen Xiao Fang of Quantum Touch spoke with us recently and shared these words of wisdom: “We have all kinds of beauty contests. My opinion is that they are such nonsense, except perhaps for the fun of watching. How can we
compare our beauty? Women are like different kinds of flowers. Which one is more beautiful than the other? When falling in love, a five year-old girl has the same heart and feelings as a fifty year-old woman.
“To accept ourselves as exactly who we are is a long learning and mastering process. Self-criticism is a life-long habit for a lot of us. How can we find the peace and love within ourselves and extend it to the world? Our emotions are like oceans of which only we know the depth.
As mothers, sisters, wives and friends, we stand in the world, and our role is ever important in this critical time on earth. If each of us can find the beauty and love within, the world will be healed naturally.
As women living in Hawaii, is it not our kuleana to tap into that deep reservoir of loving compassion that lies at the heart of the feminine? And then we may use our privilege and our joy to make this lifespring
available to a thirsty world.

Lymph Drainage Therapy
The proper function of the lymphatic system is critical to our body’s ability to maintain a healthy immune system and to our overall health.
Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) is a gentle and non-invasive hands-on modality. Although lymph drainage is the conventional treatment for lymphedema (we see secondary lymphedema due to mastectomy, lumpectomy or removal of lymph node chains) LDT has many more applications, including: Detoxify the body, regenerate tissues, relief of chronic inflammation, cosmetic and esthetic application, immune system stimulation for preventive and therapeutic effects.
“I am excited to introduce lymphatic breast care. Breast care is an important part of health that is often neglected due to the stigmas surrounding the treatment of this part of the body. The multiple applications of LDT for breast-related problems is too important to be ignored. Therefore I am offering to teach a self-care protocol, empowering women with preventative healthcare,” Veetkaya Kueppershaus tells us.
Two sessions: $60 each. If you are not ready for this, you can always come for a lymphatic “face lift”.
Veetkaya is a Licensed Massage Therapist in the State of Hawaii and Certified Lymphedema Therapist. She has studied extensively with Bruno Chikly M.D.,D.O. (hon) and will teach a one-day workshop in LDT on Friday, October 5 in Haiku. Call for more info: 878-3380.

Pukalani Chiropractic
Pukalani Chiropractic believes in your health. Chiropractic stems from the Greek word “chiro” which means “by hand.” Dr. Janssen has been practicing chiropractic healing for over 22 years. He is a Palmer College graduate. He utilizes several different chiropractic techniques in his day-to-day practice at Pukalani Chiropractic. He is a firm believer in the combination of chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, physical therapy and specific rehabilitation exercises and teaches all of his patients different forms of spinal stabilization through exercise.
Industrial, auto and sports injuries are treated in his upcountry clinic, as well as seeing patients on an on-going basis for a preventative approach. Dr. Janssen knows from experience that people who come in “to clean their slates,” so to speak, can prevent small spinal problems from becoming big troublesome conditions.
Dr. Janssen is a member of an IPA (Independent Physicians Association). Through this plan, county and state workers can benefit for treatments.

Ayurveda
The Mother of all Healing. It is said that Ayurveda, the ancient form of healing from India, is the earliest school of medicine known to humans.
Nature itself is known as feminine as it nourishes and sustains us in body, mind and spirit. The earth feeds us, fire transforms us, wind moves within us as the nervous system of thoughts and feelings. Ether reminds us that we come from space and sound. The word Ayur-Veda means: The knowledge of truth. More than a medical system Ayurveda is a way of life, and a way of cooperating with Nature and living in harmony with her. In India, the minute a child is born, warm sesame oil is massaged into the baby and mother to nurture, calm and sustain their existence on earth. In Sanskrit language, the word oil is translated as: “sneha” which means LOVE. Warm oil lubricates and relaxes the tissues deep within the well of the self . This in turn balances all five elements and three doshas: Vata , (ether and air) Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (water and earth) The goal of Ayurveda is to continually find balance within the elements of nature through proper diet, warm medicated oil treatments, yoga, mantra, and the herbs that grow in our mother soil to gently heal and to remember that we and the universe are one.
Please call Margo Prem Uma Gal, a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner since 1987, at 250-7161 for more information and/or an appointment.

Maui Ocean Massage & Spa
Maui Ocean Massage & Spa began in 2003 as a goal for a single mother wanting to spend more time with her children. Owner, Mishel Narvaez, loves three things (other than her children): Maui, the ocean, and massage therapy. While sharing an office with a chiropractor, Mishel was able to work on her skills in medical massage and became aware of many problems women generally face, such as: menopause, migranes, stress, aging (women over 65), and the large number of women looking for a place to just have a moment of peace and serenity.
Mishel has expanded her business to Paia, and added esthetics, healing camp retreats, special informative workshops, professional outcall massage therapy, event planning, and most recently, the Maui Ocean Massage & Spa Apprenticeship Programs.
Because most of Mishel’s clients are women, a lot of her treatments focus on women’s issues. A popular recipe with her women clients is the Hot Flash Massage Oil for women experiencing unwanted hot flashes, a normal occurrence during menopause. Maui Ocean Massage & Spa is currently working hard to also make it possible for individuals to access live online presentations, workshops, and other events by linking streamline videos to the company’s website.
One of Maui Ocean Massage & Spa’s goals is to connect people online to discuss issues concerning men and women wanting to learn more about the benefits of healing therapies, achieving a higher self-esteem/confidence and that, with the right direction, maintaining optimal health is possible.
