Yellow Seed Bamboo
Yellow Seed Bamboo is proud to supply Maui with non-invasive clumping bamboo for privacy barrier and windbreak. In addition to hedges we would also like to feature Timber bamboo. Timber bamboo could provide the island with the quickest way to produce sustainable building materials. Its culms are harvested annually leaving the plant healthy and productive for many lifetimes and you can grow enough timber for one house per acre per year. Hawai‘i has many an ideal growing environments for timber bamboo and we are preparing to install plantations of all sizes. The plantation species of choice is South American Guadua bamboo. Guadua is one of the strongest bamboos in the world. It is non-invasive and an open clumper allowing ample room between the timbers which grow up to 6 inches in diameter. In Columbia it has been proven to be superior building material. Guadua can be used to construct buildings as well as beautiful interior work and furniture. Currently Yellow Seed Bamboo has a large supply of treated Guadua bamboo imported from Colombia ready to use for construction. We are limited to interior design, furniture and small out buildings because Guadua has not yet been passed as a code approved building material. We intend to grow, harvest and treat timber bamboo providing Hawai‘i with all aspects of bamboo for our planets future. We are hosting a bamboo building workshop this summer with an expert from Colombia that is open to the public. Find out more at yellowseedbamboo.com

Downing & Associates
Michael S. Downing, P.E., of Downing and Associates (D&A) began his civil engineering consulting business here on Maui thirty years ago. D&A designed and supervised construction of over 300 civil engineering projects throughout Maui County. His assignments as a State project engineer included the construction of four new major concrete/steel bridges in Maui County.
Although his full time occupation is with State Highways, D&A is open for business on a part time basis with the primary focus on construction management. He continues to uphold the same sense of loyalty, duty and insistence on quality for homeowners. Being a construction manager means that he is hired as the owner’s representative to make sure that owner is being treated fairly in terms of both labor and costs. He is there to assure the homeowner that contractors and subcontractors are never cutting corners with inferior materials or low-quality workmanship. In turn, he also insures that the workers are being compensated for their labor in an honest and timely manner. “Fair pay for fair work with no hidden charges” is the name of his game. Sounds like a good one to have on the team.

Upcountry Modifications
Upcountry Modifications, located in Haiku, is a full-service excavation company which specializes in property excavations, driveway and foundation preparations, septic system and utility installations and slope erosion control. We have been in business for 10 years and have recently upgraded our services and capabilities. While traditionally most of our business has been in Upcountry, we are happy to provide services island-wide.
Our company consistently strives to be sensitive to our unique island ecosystems by using effective, yet more compact machinery, in order to leave a lower impact on our environment.
The company owner/operator, Shayne Edelhertz, has been on Maui for 20 years, graduating from both Haleakala Waldorf and Maui High Schools, with continuing education at University of Hawaii. In addition, Shayne has taken extensive coursework in permaculture, sustainable development and alternative energy and utilizes these skills in his business. Most of Upcountry’s excavation projects begin with a holistic evaluation of the land in order to ensure that the final project continues to reflect the natural processes of the land. After any excavation service, native plants are reintroduced to control erosion and restore native ecosystems, especially on properties with large populations of invasive species.
Eventually, all homes will require driveway replacement, utility installation and excavation of foundation footings and Upcountry is prepared to complete these projects in a efficient, reliable and environmentally responsible way. Upcountry responds to calls immediately and you can usually expect a free on-site estimate in one to two days.
For a free cost estimate, contact Shayne Edelhertz at upcountrymodifications@yahoo.com or 870-9658
