Marla Henderson Naturalist Designer
Marla Henderson Design Studio is located in Haiku on the Pua Lea Estate – the site of Maui’s oldest sugar mill built in 1865. Marla and her team assist clients with everything involved in creating beautiful and unique spaces for both residential and commercial projects. Consulting services are available for interior and outdoor spaces as well as design and construction for custom furnishings. Their showroom is filled with rugs, fabrics, exclusive home furnishings and architectural elements imported from around the world.Marla has been called a naturalist designer because nature is her muse. She respects the flow between the inside and outside. Comfort is a priority and the designs are about living graciously and gracefully – transcending trends. She believes an interior should reflect and nurture the individual and prefers to work with artists and artisans to create special spaces. The use of eco-conscious materials is recommended when appropriate and available.
Growing up on the Sea Islands of Georgia, Marla was profoundly influenced by the beauty of nature around her and when she moved to New York City in her early twenties–she carried this influence with her as she began her career. She honed her design skills for over a decade working with many respected and well known clients in the art, film and fashion worlds.
All was well but she missed the ocean and finally made it to Maui where she is back doing what she loves best–creating spaces in a tropical setting.
In 2001 she started her own rug, blanket and furniture lines, which are sold nationally and have been featured in Architectural Digest, Interior Design, and In Style among other publications.
She was named one of the “Top 25 Young Design Stars” in 2005 by House Beautiful.

3D Builders Resource Conscious
Don Roth and Dan McEvoy formed 3D Builders and Design in 1994. Both are from the Pacific Northwest, Roth from Oregon and McEvoy from Seattle. “Don had been building here about five years,” says McEvoy. “I used to own Maui Lumber.”
They have built the firm into one of the top construction outfits on Maui, focusing on high-end residential and commercial projects. They built The Shops at Wailea, The Clubhouse at the Dunes Golf Course and are currently working on Aina Nalu in Lahaina where they are converting a 360-room hotel into a 188 condo hotel rooms. They expect to be in the last phase of that project by the end of the year.
On the residential side, they are working on an $8.8 million home in Lahaina. They build about 25 homes a year on Maui and the Big Island, says McEvoy and he doesn’t expect that to change soon. “The market is steady for high-end homes,” he says.
They accomplish it all with just 25 full time employees and scores of subcontractors.
“We have encouraged some of our employees to become subcontractors,” says McEvoy.
3D is a resource conscious builder. They were the first builder in the state to make solar water heating a standard feature on every home they build. They also design features into their projects that conserve water and energy.www.3Dbuilders.com. 871-5575.

Solar Hot Water Saves Money, Energy
Solar water heating is one home improvement that will pay for itself over time, and continue to provide savings for years to come. For a typical Hawaii home without air conditioning, water heating accounts for the largest portion of energy use. A solar water heater can eliminate most or all of that portion. It also reduces oil consumption by about 4-1/2 barrels a year, and saves a family of four about $50 a month, depending on hot water use. A typical solar water heating system may cost about $5000 or more (depending on the type, geographic area, family size, and other factors). But a buyer may end up paying just $1,400 after state and federal tax credits, and Maui Electric Company’s (MECO) $1,000 rebate.
You may also qualify for an interest free loan for a solar installation with MECO. Your monthly payments are based on estimated savings. The loan funds are provided by the County of Maui. Under this program, over 300 Maui families are saving energy and money with clean, renewable solar energy. For more information about solar and other energy savings, call Maui Electric Company at (808) 871-8461.
