Viniyoga was a name give by Desikachar to Western students in the late 1980s. It describes the appropriate use of Raja Yoga to progressively develop a student. Yoga Awareness is of the Krishnamacharya lineage (Desikachar), American Viniyoga (Gary Kraftsow), and Yoga Raksanam (DV Dridhar, Radha Sridhar, Viji Vasu).
The founder of Yoga Awareness is Ted Surman, originally from New Zealand. Since 1997 he has studied with Gary Kraftsow at the American Viniyoga Institute and at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram. Ted travels each year to Chennai, India for ongoing studies with his teachers at Yoga Raksanam. Maui Dermatology LLC has a state-of-the-art dermatology office. The owner, Dr. J. Marshall Knox is a board-certified dermatologist and also has a Master of Public Health involving the environment and toxicology. The word ‘dermatology’ means the study of skin. ‘Dermatologist’ means formal training has been completed and ‘board certified’ means the doctor has the highest credentials to treat skin conditions. He has over 20 years of teaching and practicing dermatology. We were blessed to have Dr. Knox make Maui his home three years ago.

Cervical Cancer and the New HPV Vaccine: ‘About 30 types of Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV, are sexually transmitted,’ states Shannon Ray PA-C, from Dr. Mastroianni’s office in Pukalani Square.
At least 50% of sexually active adults in this country have been exposed to HPV. Different HPV types cause genital warts and virtually all can cause cervical cancer. ‘Gardasil, the HPV vaccine, prevents against the four types that cause most cervical cancer and genital warts.
The HPV vaccine is recommended for females age nine through 26, and even if not sexually active, the vaccine will help prevent infection later in life after becoming sexually active. Even women with prior HPV infections should get vaccinated to protect against other HPV types. The vaccine series consists of three shots given over eight months. Presently, insurance coverage varies with patient age and different insurance plans. Women under 18 with no insurance or on a Quest program may qualify for free vaccinations through the Vaccine For Children program offered at our office.
PAP tests and early treatment of pre-cancer have already greatly reduced cervical cancer death in America, despite increasing rates of HPV infection. But widespread use of the HPV vaccine will prevent even more cancers, and decrease the overall number of infected people. The HPV vaccine won’t prevent 100% of cervical cancers, so women still need PAP tests and annual pelvic exams. Not all HPV infections will progress to cancer, but because cervical cancer is now mostly preventable, Dr. Rob Mastroianni and his staff recommend the HPV vaccine to all eligible young women.
