E-mail this story to a friend Version of this story optimized for printing
April 10, 2008 Issue

Aloha and welcome to our Green Guide 2008! Beginning with the message at the top of our masthead, Haleakala Times has always focused on awareness of our island home and the world around us. Cultural and environmental issues have been at the forefront of this publication since it’s inception. HT started out as a small paper, put together in a living room in Haiku, and we remain true to those roots to this day, even though we now have a “real office” in Pa‘ia town. We support local issues and local businesses – and we hope you will do the same. The businesses featured in our Green Guide are making a difference here in Hawai‘i, today and for our future. We are proud to focus on them this issue, and thank them for their concern for our future here on this beautiful planet. Happy Earth Day!

Akamai Pest Solutions
We all do what we can to make a difference, whether it’s recycling or energy conservation. Why should pest control be any different? Akamai Pest Solutions is the smarter way to control pests in paradise! This company can eradicate termites without tenting and fumigating, using a substance that is not harmful to humans. XT-2000 is a naturally occurring essential oil containing the active ingredient d-limonene. This citrus oil is derived from the rind of the orange, and when injected directly into termite galleries, XT-2000 kills termites and their eggs on contact. Also, any wood treated with XT-2000 is toxic to termites – the product can wick through the wood, soak into surrounding areas and kill any termite that ingests the treated wood. In addition to being highly effective, and safer for humans and the environment than fumigation, you can save a considerable amount of money by not having to tent your home – from the expense of several days of alternate lodging, to replacing landscaping damaged by the fumigation process. You can safely remain in your home, while the termites are kicked out! Our technicians are certified to apply this treatment system safely and effectively – please call to find out more! 808-280-4300 (Maui) or 808-640-4499 (Big Island). www.akamaipestsolution.com.

Bohemia Boutique
Its official, GREEN is the new black; no, I am not talking about the spring ’09 color palette, I’m talking about ethics. The number one trend this season (and next) is being “eco-chic.” Finally, fashion designers are being conscious of the environment and proving it on the runways with their choice of fabric and factory.

County of Maui – Department of Water
Many people either do not know what a xeriscape garden is or think it is a cactus garden. Xeriscape is simply using plants which will naturally thrive in your environment. Planning is the first and most important step to a successful xeriscape, because it allows you to install your landscape in phases, which minimizes initial expenses. Creating your xeriscape in phases gives the gardener an all-important tool: budgeting for funding and time. Take your time planning, go and visit the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens to see a great xeriscape garden, and stop by the Water Department's Conservation office at 59 Kanoa Street. There you can get information and self-closing hose nozzles if you bring a copy of your bill. The Maui County Planting Plan is also a good source of information. When planning your xeriscape, the first things to consider are: What do you need from your landscape? How much time do you want to spend on your landscape, for pleasure and for maintenance? Answers to these questions and those that follow will help you get the most from your landscape planning efforts, and turn your dreams into reality.
What kind of backyard activities do you enjoy: family or social gatherings, sunning, games? Do you have children or pets; what are their needs? Do you need storage for tools, recreational vehicles, or other items? What image or style do you want – formal, traditional, or natural? Would you like to have specific plants in your landscape? Are you interested in growing a vegetable garden? Does your property have views to preserve or screen? What kinds of qualities already exist in your landscape: slopes, existing plants, structures, rocks? Is the drainage in your yard adequate? Are there other questions that you need answered? This is the first step to creating a sustainable landscape which can survive prolonged periods without rainfall. Think about what kind of plants would naturally live in your environment.

The Department of Water Supply thanks you for saving water because, BY WATER ALL THINGS FIND LIFE.

East Maui Watershed Partnership
Experience the East Maui Watershed.

Have you ever been in a native Hawaiian rainforest? Would you know one if you saw it? Have you lunched beneath giant Hawaiian raspberry stalks and watched the fog pass through the ‘olapa, ‘ohi’a, and koa trees around you? Or played “drums” on the mounds of vibrant green moss that line your path through the forest? Have you had the satisfaction of yanking out invasive weeds so the Hawaiian mamane and ‘ohelo have a chance to grow?

If your answer is yes, mahalo! Thank you for taking time to get to know the Hawaiian forests. The East Maui Watershed Partnership is tasked with protecting a particular Hawaiian ecosystem – the largest intact native rainforest in the state: the East Maui Watershed. The health and biodiversity of this forest is directly linked to the present and future water supply for Maui. While much of the rainforest is accessible only by helicopter, there is one special place that is preserved for you: The Nature Conservancy’s Waikamoi Preserve.

We wish to thank the keiki who have tromped and learned and played and chanted with us in the Preserve. Mahalo to the teachers who called us to arrange field trips and presentations. Mahalo to the artists who have pondered light and shadow, translating their Waikamoi experience into art to share with others at our annual native species art contest at Viewpoints Gallery.

And if you haven’t experienced a Hawaiian rainforest yet, why not? Get together with your classmates, co-workers, or other community group and give us a call! 808-573-6999. www.eastmauiwatershed.org.

Eco Products Maui
Eco Products is a locally owned business focusing on helping people live comfortably off the county water system or MECO electric grid or both. Chris and Diana Baz,who live in ‘Ulupalakua, own and operate Eco Products Maui.

Chris started Eco Products Maui in 1988, installing water tanks for rain catchment, wells and other purposes with integrated water supply systems and photovoltaic systems. Chris has been living “off-grid” since the 70’s, installed his first wind mill in 1975 and first photovoltaic in 1980, all on Maui. Now their home is still totally photovoltaic electric with a modern system that runs a washer and gas dryer, three computers, video/tv, satellite, microwave etc., with little or no problems.

Eco Products has a competent team for water or solar installations here on Maui and with 65 percent government rebates, photovoltaic systems that either “grid tie” or stand alone are a very timely idea. We also offer Paloma demand water heaters for substantial gas savings and Gas refrigerators for off-grid people too. With the moratorium on new water meters many Mauians are finding catchment systems offer better quality water at lower cost.

Eco Products Maui is the only full service water tank/water supply systems company on Maui offering the highest quality water tanks available with superior HDPE liners reinforced with nylon that lasts far longer than conventional vinyl. We are proud to announce our new “Eco Clean water catchment system” which cleans the water before and after the water storage tank. Utilizing the latest technology “silent” pumps, overflows and the new floating water intake the superiority of catchment water is clear.

Give Chris a call at 808-878 6762 to talk about your situation and vision for an ecological future.

Focus Maui Nui
Maui Economic Development Board, Inc.

Since 1982, the Maui Economic Development Board, Inc. (MEDB) has worked to provide leadership and vision in our community for the responsible design and development of a strong, sustainable, and diversified economy for Maui County. With an extensive network of public, private and nonprofit partners, MEDB builds homegrown solutions to countywide problems.

Priority is given to honoring our community’s environmental and cultural values as we seek to assist knowledge-based industries, transform education, prepare a workforce for the Information Age, and build community dialogue and consensus about our future.

In 2003, MEDB released the results of its unprecedented community-based process called Focus Maui Nui. More than 1,700 Maui residents participated in small group-facilitated discussions that set the vision, values, and action-based strategies for the future of Maui County (for a copy of the Executive Summary or the complete Focus Maui Nui Report: www.focusmauinui.com). They ranked protection of the natural environment, including our water resources, among our five highest priorities to secure the sustainable future. This includes encouraging renewable energy, protecting native species and adopting responsible transportation alternatives.

H&P Diaper Service
Cloth diapers often bring to mind visions of diapers soaking in the toilet, and buckets overflowing. Fortunately, cloth diapering has evolved. The utilization of a diaper service makes it a very convenient and economical  means of diapering. Maui now has a diaper service available for island wide delivery (except Hana) of natural 100% cotton cloth diapers, delivered to your door on a weekly basis. With modern diaper covers made of natural fibers in a range of colors, and various closure options, cloth diapering is the eco-friendly, parent friendly way to go.

With the help of Maui Economic Opportunity B.D.C., Karen Buller fulfilled her dream of starting her own home-based business, and H&P Diaper Service began providing weekly service to Maui families in December 2007. Karen raised three children using cloth diapers without the convenience of a diaper service, and sometimes even without a clothes dryer. Her knowledge from personal experience is almost limitless. She will come to your home and show you how to use cloth diapers and is always available to answer questions. Her service and dedication to her customers is personable and efficient. She has been known to make an emergency run to a client’s house when a baby is born sooner than expected, and wants to help make diapering a positive experience for parents and families. Karen can be contacted at 808-298-7700 or hpdiaperservice@gmail.com.

Turn off your air conditioning and fans, and open your windows again! For more information please call Hawaiian Door & Window Screens, LLC at 808-268-6565.

Hawaii Organic Farmers Association (HOFA)
Hawaii Organic Farmers Association (HOFA) is a non-profit membership organization which has been supporting organic food and agriculture in Hawaii since its inception 15 years ago. HOFA has helped to implement farm-based legislation and expand public awareness and education. HOFA is the only USDA accredited certifying agency for organic growers and processors in the state of Hawaii. The non-profit sustains a membership which includes certified farmers and processors, retailers, small exempt farmers, customers and other supporting members.

HOFA’s mission is to protect the life of the land and the health of communities through education about organic land care practices. The members believe that developing and strengthening certified organic farms enhances Hawaii’s many fragile ecosystems and provides a basis for a sustainable economy.

HOFA has just completed an Organic Crop Inspector Training Course in conjunction with the Independent Organic Inspectors Association, which resulted in seven new crop inspectors for Hawaii, to meet the growing demand.

HOFA has a number of outreach programs. They offer the first Hawaii Organic Products Directory, funded in part by the Hawaii State Department of Agriculture and the Hawaii Farm Bureau. The directory lists Hawaii’s certified organic producers of various crops, honey, livestock, and processed products.  The guide also includes information about local farm apprenticeships, island farmers markets, organic seed sources, agriculture supply stores, and natural food retail stores. The cost of the directory is $6, and can be ordered by calling 808-969-7789, or by downloading from www.hawaiiorganicfarmers.org.

Island iPod Repair
You won’t find a suit and tie at this high-tech company. Island iPod Repair is a rapidly growing business owned by women, nestled in the Puna jungle on the Big Island. Founders Jamie McConnell and Sharyl McGrew had dreams of being able to work globally while still being able to swim with the dolphins on lunch breaks. One day about three years ago, Sharyl, an experienced marketing and program manager, asked Jamie, a life-long entrepreneur, for help replacing a battery in her iPod. With reports that over 100 million iPods have already been sold around the world, and with no local options for getting them fixed, they soon realized an opportunity to help other people in Hawaii with broken iPods and keep them out of the landfills.

“We love what we’re doing,” says Jamie. “People are so attached to their iPods. We love being able to get people back to their music as quickly as possible.”

Island iPod Repair offers free estimates, a convenient iPod shipping box delivered to your door, and a strong commitment to quality service. Most iPods are repaired and back in your hands within three days. They also sell iPod replacement parts for people who want to fix it themselves, and an iPod buy-back program. With the help of local investors, plans are underway to move into other products, including the iPhone, iTouch, and PSP. www.islandipodrepair.com. 808-965-2253.

joy’s place
joy’s place is a hidden gem on Maui’s South Shore. Tucked away in the Island Surf Building, the café is open six days a week, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They offer a selection of food that are minimally processed, and use fresh, live, local organic ingredients as much as possible. The “Statement of Purpose” printed on their menu explains that they offer wholesome foods for everyone. The menu is vegetarian friendly, but they do offer some items that contain free-range turkey or fresh local tuna. They have daily specials that are inventive and yummy, and they will email you the list of specials at the beginning of each week so that you can plan ahead of time. Besides the daily soup (which is usually vegetarian and always delicious), they have a wide selection of rolls, wraps and sandwiches with wheat-free options like collard greens instead of tortillas or bread! They also have amazing and inventive salads, falafel, nut burgers and smoothies. The desserts are live or homebaked, mostly vegan and sugar free – and some are wheat free as well. So if you have special dietary needs, many times they can be met right on the regular menu!

In addition to the restaurant, joy’s place also presents cooking classes. The next class is April 20, and the theme is Principle of Healthy Eating – Elements of a Meal. For more info and to pre-register, please call 808-879-9258.

Maui Earth Compost & Organic Reduction
“In any great country the prime physical asset, the physical asset more valuable than any other, is the fertility of the soil.” - Theodore Roosevelt

Composting has been the historic, proven way to generate a natural, rich soil for growing. George Washington was the first documented composter – and he may have learned his technique from the Native Americans! Maui Earth Compost Organic Exchange is a private company that accepts green waste and uses it to produce rich dark compost, thick high-carbon mulch, worm castings and various soil blends. Every yard of compost is equivalent to two bags, or one hundred pounds, of 20-10-10 fertilizer. There is NO bio (human) waste in their products, and they make sure that the green waste that is dropped does not contain glass, boards, rocks, plastic, drywall, rubber, or cardboard. The company has two convenient locations to serve Maui residents, one in Kihei and another in Kahului. The tipping fee in Kahului is $15, and in Kihei it’s free (and saves a drive to central Maui!) Homeowners are allowed one drop-off per week. Retail sales of compost, mulch, soil and casting are available six days a week – the compost goes out the door as soon as they make it. They don’t keep a large supply on hand, because it’s better fresh, so please call 808-877-0403 for more information!

Maui Tomorrow Foundation
A Message from Maui Tomorrow:

Island sustainability: water (from the source to the sea); alternative sources of energy; food security; the need for affordable housing; comprehensive planning and management of our natural and cultural resources… look for more community forums in the coming year as Maui Tomorrow brings diverse groups and lively debate to the important issues confronting Maui now and in the future.

We all share the same island; we must find common solutions. Setting higher standards for proposed developments such as Wailea 670 and Makena, continues to be a major focus for Maui Tomorrow, along with a continued demand for environmental review of the Hawaii Superferry as we appeal the constitutionality of Act 2.

We urge you to get involved in the planning process as Maui County’s GPAC holds public meetings from April to November. They’ll advise the County Council on the new General Plan, based in part, from what they hear from residents.

Maui Tomorrow is built on strong relationships with you, our friends and donors. You can help us through your generous support and by spreading the word about the work we do – you will be expanding the circle of strong relationships that allows us to keep asking the hard questions.

– Irene Bowie, Executive Director

Pacific Biodiesel
Pacific Biodiesel – sustainable before it was a fad!

Worldwide biodiesel production has grown rapidly due to the environmental and economic advantages this alternative fuel can have over petroleum. Pacific Biodiesel has been a true pioneer in the burgeoning American biofuels industry from the first days of U.S. biodiesel, experiencing advances in technology and observing the creation of various business models.

The source of feedstock for biofuels is a crucial issue that garners increasing attention from the global environmental community. When the environmental, economic and social impacts of a particular gallon of biodiesel are calculated, it is clear that not all biofuels are “green” or sustainable. More and more information has become available about the triple bottom line effects of different production and business models.

Since 1996 Pacific Biodiesel has proven its community-based biodiesel which maximizes the advantages of smaller plants by utilizing feedstocks grown or collected nearby. A significantly smaller environmental footprint is obtained by reducing the long distance shipping of feedstock to, and product from, the refinery. The economic advantages to the community are maximized through local investment and ownership and the creation of jobs, all of which keep profits in the community. With the end product distributed locally, this model results in ultimate energy security. For more information on the company or the benefits of biodiesel, visit www.biodiesel.com.

Pacific Whale Foundation
During the 1970s when humpback whales were on the brink of extinction, a group of Maui residents – including a young man named Greg Kaufman – joined together to help save the whales. With a shoestring budget and the desire to make a difference, they founded the nonprofit Pacific Whale Foundation in 1980.

Since then, Pacific Whale Foundation’s marine research, public education and conservation programs have worked to protect whales and their ocean home. Pacific Whale Foundation’s research has spanned the Pacific, including whale studies in Hawaii, Japan, Alaska, Tonga, Australia and Ecuador, plus studies of Maui’s coral reefs, wild dolphins and toothed whales. Their award-winning marine education programs have served thousands of local schoolchildren through field trips and classroom programs for grades K-12. The foundation’s many visitor education programs promote eco-friendly enjoyment of Maui’s ocean environment.

Pacific Whale Foundation’s Eco-Adventures include whalewatches, snorkel tours to Molokini and Lana’i, and sunset cruises. Recognized as a leader in ecotourism and responsible wildlife watching, Pacific Whale Foundation’s recent innovations include Whale Protection Devices to protect whales from vessel propellers, and using biodegradable cups, plates and utensils. One hundred percent of the profits help fund research, education and conservation projects on behalf of whales and the oceans. To learn more, visit www.pacificwhale.org or call 808-249-8811.

Rising Sun Solar
Rising Sun Solar Electric – Proven and Reliable

Tired of paying higher electric bills? Within the year, the cost of oil and electricity in Hawaii has risen over 20 percent. The locally based Rising Sun Solar Electric aims to change that by helping people “get off the gas.”

Specializing in the design, sales, and installation of solar electric (PV) and hot water systems, Rising Sun Solar Electric pioneered the use of solar net-metered systems in Hawaii – installing more systems than any other contractor on Maui. Among many projects, it has partnered with the State and the utility on the Sun Power for Schools Program and the Natural Energy Lab in Kona.

Customers island-wide and from all walks of life appreciate the fact that the company’s products and customer service are both proven and reliable. Being a certified Sharp and SMA installer – the world’s largest manufacturers of solar panels and inverters – Rising Sun backs its products with a 25-year warranty.

“The world has come to grips with global warming – and the fact that we can do something to change it,” said co-owner Matias Bessaso. “Other than buying a hybrid vehicle or running bio-diesel, solar electric is the most meaningful and readily available way to reduce your energy footprint on Maui and in the world.”

Rising Sun founded the nonprofit Hawaii PV Coalition, www.hawaiipvcoalition.org, with other homeowners and businesses to promote awareness about Hawaii’s energy future.

For more information or a free estimate, call 808-579-8287 or visit www.risingsunsolar.com. Rising Sun Solar Electric’s office is located in Haiku Town Center, 810 Kokomo Road, Ste. 160, Haiku, HI 96708.

Sierra Club Maui

Sierra Club Maui Group now has over 650 members and growing. Statewide, the Hawaii Sierra Club has 6,000 members. The Sierra Club Political endorsement is viewed by many legislators as a premier endorsement. What Legislator wouldn’t be grateful to know they are considered to be a lawmaker on the good side of the environment, sustainability, conservation and education? From the Legacy Beach campaigns’ “Leave a Legacy to our Children,” which has identified special lands and open spaces for park land conservation, to legal projects for protecting our precious water resources and free flowing streams, the Sierra Club Maui Group is a dedicated club of volunteers and advocates. You can contact the Sierra Club through its website www.hi.sierraclub.org/maui and find information about upcoming activities, conservation issues, service trips, links to other conservation groups, volunteer and education information, email sign-ups for alerts, and most of all how to become a member. Whispering Winds Bamboo
Whispering Winds Bamboo is dedicated to “Creating a Culture of Bamboo” here on Maui, which will advance sustainability and ecological agriculture in the Hawaiian Islands. We are committed to educating the public to the possibilities of bamboo to feed us, shelter us, to protect our soils and watersheds and to add more jobs to our economy.

We are planning to accomplish this mission with an interwoven strategy that includes; cooperating with other bambooistas in educational endeavors, promoting our Maui nursery and the sale of bamboo plants to give the public first hand experience, experimenting on our plantation with silviculture methods most suited to our climate, furthering research by providing a setting in our plantation, growing a significant amount of timber poles which will provide the resource base to stimulate value-added industries (furniture, plywood, flooring, musical instruments) as well as the possibility of a revolution in housing construction. Bamboo is just too beautiful and gloriously practical to let it remain a token tropical touch on a tiki bar.

Whispering Winds Bamboo currently has 41 varieties of non-invasive clumping tropical bamboos, of which they have selected some special varieties to propagate for nursery sales here on Maui. With a special order, Whispering Winds can supply almost anything.

Listen carefully... on the other side of the whispering wind you can hear the soft symphony of bamboo growing and the murmur of a revolution. www.whisperingwindsbamboo.com.

Yellow Seed Bamboo
Yellow Seed Bamboo propagates from 35 non-invasive clumping species. We specialize in privacy hedges for residential and commercial applications. We are also proud to supply the islands with varieties ideal for windbreak, ornamentals (black, golden, white) and timber as well as some species that do great in higher elevations and other species which thrive in lower elevations. Planting a bamboo hedge is the fastest way to achieve privacy and windbreak. In one year from the time of planting, bamboo (which started in a five gallon sized pot) can grow up to 15 feet tall, with the base growth getting as big around as three feet. Within three years, you could have a complete hedge that will last for the rest of your life. Your tropical bamboo hedge could also provide you with harvestable poles for construction, furniture making, and crafts. Another bonus is that the new shoots are often edible and delicious. Yellow Seed Bamboo can be reached at 808-870-0591 or www.yellowseedbamboo.com.

For more details visit our website: www.yellowseedbamboo.com. We offer competitive wholesale pricing to all landscape companies and nurseries in addition to monthly discounts on certain species and large orders for residents. Come tour our facility during business hours: Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., or call 808-870-0591 to schedule an appointment.
