Business / Entrepreneurs get free ideas and help at 'Brown Bag' sessions

Cash flow, credit basics, evaluating your idea among topics

The Office of Economic Development offers several “Brown Bag” workshops in October. 

Reservations may be made by calling 873-8247. Attendees are asked to bring their own lunches. Unless otherwise indicated, all workshops are free of charge and presented at the Maui County Business Resource Center in the Maui Mall.

•Business Structures Workshop, on Wednesday, Oct. 4, from  noon to 1 p.m., will illustrate how each business structure has unique characteristics. This workshop provides an overview of the most popular business types.  Teaching is Jayna C. Uyehara, Esq. who has served as lead attorney and legislative coordinator for the Department of Taxation. 

•Artful NetWORKING, the Do’s and Don’ts”  helps business owners use networking tools to increase referrals.  The workshop on Friday, Oct. 13, from 4 to 6 p.m. is taught by Lisa Kimura, president of the Hawaii Women Business Center for the past 3 years.   

•  What is a Credit Score? How to Clean Up your Credit, Dispute Basics and More is offered by Sally Handley and Gerry Lum, loan fund managers with MEO Business Development Corp. The workshop is  Wednesday, Oct. 18, from noon to 1 p.m. 

• Positive Cash Flow Equals Profits, second workshop in the Business Literacy series, is Thursday, Oct. 19, from noon to 1 p.m. It is presented by SCORE counselor Richard Kehoe, MBA, CPA, owner and operator of his own accounting and tax firm. Attendees will learn how to go from a negative cash to a positive cash flow, and prepare and understand cash-flow statements for business.  

•The ABC’s of a Business Plan will be presented by Susie Thieman of Maui Economic Opportunity on Wednesday and Tuesday, Oct. 24, from noon to 1 p.m.  Participants will discuss the reasons for writing a business plan and receive an outline of the business plan taught by MEO’s Core Four Business Plan course. Thieman is instructor of the MEO program.

•Evaluating Your Idea will be held Friday, Oct. 27,  from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  David B. Fisher, Maui Center Director, Hawaii SBDC Network will facilitate the process of evaluating if a business concept is good.  Participants will get the basic model for alyzing the feasibility of a business with special focus on market research and economic analysis.

•NxLevel Entrepreneurial Planning Series starts on Monday, Oct. 2. The 12-session is presented by David Fisher who teaches NxLevel. Call 875-2402 or visit hawaii-sbdc.org.
