Kaanapali beachwalk extended north
KAANAPALI — Maui Kaanapali Villas, with the help of Lahaina Bypass Now (LBN), built a new pathway that connects the Kahekili Beach (Airport Beach) path to the Kaanapali beachwalk.
Walkers can now stroll from the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas to the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa on a mile-and-a-half of oceanfront pathway.
LBN is working with coastal landowners to extend pathways so pedestrians can ultimately walk from Kapalua to Lahaina Town.
LBN hopes to connect the Kapalua Coastal Trail to sidewalks along Napili, Kahana and Honokowai, then connect to the Kaanapali Historical Trail and beachwalk, the future Wahikuli Interpretive Trail, and Lahaina’s Historic Trail on sidewalks along Front Street.
One of LBN’s transportation strategies is to create walking and biking paths to encourage alternative forms of transportation.
LBN volunteer Harold Hyman worked with the Maui Kaanapali Villas Homeowners Association to connect the dead-end path at Kahekili Beach to the existing pathway at the Royal Lahaina Resort.
Maui Kaanapali Villas agreed to pay for and install the pathway. The joint team submitted an application to the County of Maui, which helped expedite the permit process.
